Define the term system as a set of interconnected components that are interacting to form a unified whole.

Answer:

A system as a set of interconnected components that are interacting to form a unified whole.

The components that make up the earth's system are the spheres, namely the Geospheres, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, and the Biosphere which work to together to for the earth we all know.

Explanation:

The easiest way to understand the interconnection between each component is by comparing it to the government which is composed of the Executive, Judiciary and the Legislative branch. Each branch is independent of each other but keeps the entire government system functioning in a somewhat satisfactory manner.

So in an earth science realm, we only need to replace the 3 branches of government with the 4 spheres of the Earth. They all interact naturally and tend to correct each other whenever a slight failure is felt.

This happens in every manufacturing facility around the world. Just as an automobile factory cannot roll out that shiny new car if the painting department goes on strike, the earth would look very different if one of the spheres all of a sudden fails.
